Kent MArch UNIT 4 2019

BIG DATA & COLLECTIVISM
2019

This year Unit 4 explored ‘Collectives’ & the notions of ‘Collecting’, examining changing the perception of Architecture & Society through the lens of Technological advancement and in the context of the beautiful and surreal post-industrial landscape of the Hoo Peninsula, Kent.

The final project (in terms of Narrative, Design and Theory) was based upon 4 principle points of directed research undertaken in the Autumn Semester which were:

• A Collective belief structure
• A poetic or sensatory appreciation of the site – phenomenology.
• A socio-political standpoint on the influence that Technology, Data and Social Media is having on Contemporary Society.
• A site research and mapping exercise

Our Social Political perspective: Perception, Generation Z, Data and Technology.
To participate in Contemporary Society in the UK means living in a world of Technology, Social Media, and Big Data. Many aspects of our everyday life are now monitored, recorded, digitally organised and stored in some way. Online you can be who you want to be.

Recent scandals behind Russian interference in the US election and political manipulation by Cambridge Analytica, have demonstrated how much our lives can be influenced using our personal Data. Generation Z, like other Generations before them, are now exploring new ways of living in the modern Era. With hyper-connectivity comes choice. Collective relationships are formed from the relationship of Data, not geography. Are there new ways of looking at the world that will inform our choices of where and how to live? Is fear of technology real?
